Every note on the anti-clock wise direction from a root note from a diatonic scale is the fifth note of the scale.

EG: the note G is on the anti-clock wise direction from the root note C from C major / C minor, therefore G is the fifth of C.

Every note on the clock wise direction from a root note from a diatonic scale is the fourth note of the scale.

EG: the note F is on the clock wise direction from the root note C from C major / C Minor, therefore F is the fourth of C.
